History

The Malcolm Clan (Clann Mhaoilmhichil), also known historically as Clan Callum, traces its ancestry to the ancient royal house of Dalriada. The name derives from the Gaelic Maol Chaluim, meaning devotee of St. Columba. The Malcolms were established in the western Highlands and Argyll, where they became a prominent and respected clan.

Over the centuries, the Malcolms were closely tied with other powerful Highland families, including the Campbells. They were noted for their loyalty and service, producing military leaders and statesmen who left their mark on Scotland’s history. Their strongholds in Argyll gave them both defensive power and symbolic prominence.

Tartan

The Malcolm tartan is striking, with a bold design of greens and blues crossed with red lines, reflecting both the rugged landscapes of Argyll and the proud martial tradition of the clan.

Seat

The traditional seat of the clan is Poltalloch in Argyll, which became the hereditary home of the chiefs of Clan Malcolm. Later branches also established estates in other parts of Scotland, further spreading the family’s influence.
