MacGregor Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacGregor heritage with authentic details rooted in Scotland’s proud Highland traditions.

History & Origins

The Clan MacGregor is one of Scotland’s most storied and resilient Highland clans. Their Gaelic name, MacGriogair, means “son of Gregor.” Traditionally, the clan claims descent from the ancient Celtic royal line of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of Scots.

The MacGregors originally held lands in Glen Orchy, Glenstrae, and Glen Lyon, but their fortunes shifted dramatically during the 16th and 17th centuries when the clan was outlawed by the Scottish Crown. For nearly two centuries, MacGregors were forbidden to use their own surname—forcing many to adopt other clan names to survive. Despite persecution, the clan endured and preserved its proud heritage.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A lion’s head crowned with an antique crown

  • Mottoes:

    • “’S Rioghal Mo Dhream” — “Royal is my race” (reflecting their claimed descent from royal lineage)

    • “Buaidh no Bas” — “Victory or Death,” a fierce battle cry also associated with the clan

  • Badge etiquette: The MacGregor crest is worn within a strap-and-buckle design, symbolizing membership and loyalty.

Septs & Associated Names

Because of the proscription against the MacGregor name, many families adopted aliases or associated surnames, many of which remain recognized today. Variants and septs include: Gregor, McGregor, MacGriogair, Grier, Greer, Black, King, Peterkin, and Skinner.

Tartan

  • MacGregor Clan Tartans: Recognized designs include MacGregor (Modern, Ancient, Weathered, and Hunting).

  • The tartans reflect both bright red-based patterns and more subdued earthy tones, making them versatile for both ceremonial and everyday wear.

How to Wear

  • Pair the MacGregor crest badge with the clan tartan for formal occasions.

  • Ideal for Highland games, weddings, and heritage events, showcasing the survival and resilience of this historic clan.

  • MacGregor tartans are popular choices for kilts, scarves, ties, and accessories worldwide.
