Celebrate your MacDonald of Donald heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins

The Clan Donald, often referred to simply as "of Donald," is one of the largest and most powerful Highland clans. Its origins trace to Somerled, the 12th-century Norse-Gaelic ruler, whose descendants became Lords of the Isles. From Somerled’s grandson Donald came the name MacDonald — “son of Donald.”

The Lords of the Isles held immense power over the Western Isles and Highlands, often rivaling the Scottish Crown. Even after the forfeiture of the Lordship in 1493, the MacDonalds of Donald remained prominent, holding lands in Lochaber and Glengarry and acting as a central branch among the many MacDonald cadet lines. Their influence stretched across Argyll, the Hebrides, and Inverness-shire, deeply shaping Highland culture and politics.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A hand holding a cross-crosslet fitchee, issuing from a crown

  • Motto: Per mare per terras — “By sea and by land”

  • Badge etiquette: The crest badge is worn within a strap and buckle bearing the clan motto, symbolizing loyalty to the chief.

Septs & Associated Names

As one of the largest Scottish clans, Clan Donald encompasses many septs and related surnames. These include MacConnell, MacDaniel, MacDonell, MacDougall, MacIain, and a wide variety of regional variants. Members of the numerous cadet branches (Glengarry, Sleat, Clanranald, Keppoch, Glencoe, Dunnyveg, etc.) are all considered part of the greater Clan Donald family.

Tartan

  • MacDonald Clan Tartans: There are several tartans associated with Clan Donald and its branches. The “MacDonald of Donald” sett is distinct, but related tartans include those of Glengarry, Clanranald, and Sleat.

  • Variants exist in Modern, Ancient, and Weathered color palettes.

  • The tartans are widely recognized and suitable for kilts, plaids, and accessories proudly representing Clan Donald heritage.

How to Wear

  • For formal occasions, pair the MacDonald crest badge with the clan tartan in kilts, shawls, ties, or sashes.

  • Popular at weddings, Highland games, and heritage events, the MacDonald tartan symbolizes one of Scotland’s most iconic and historic clans.
