THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is believed to stem from the knife's dark appearance—early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, while the blades darkened with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly atop the stocking during Highland attire, signifying that the wearer is among friends and harbors no malicious intent. It's essential to remember that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!
