History

The Maitland Clan is a distinguished Lowland Scottish family with Norman origins, thought to descend from the de Mautalents of France who settled in Scotland during the 12th century. Over time, the family rose to prominence through loyal service to the Scottish Crown, earning positions of power and influence.

The Maitlands became deeply rooted in East Lothian, with their seat established at Thirlestane Castle, one of Scotland’s grandest fortresses. They played key roles in politics, law, and military service throughout the turbulent centuries of Scottish history. The family produced notable figures, including statesmen, judges, and soldiers, and were raised to the peerage as the Earls of Lauderdale.

Tartan

The Maitland tartan is designed with a pattern of deep blues, greens, and subtle reds, reflecting the clan’s Lowland heritage while maintaining the boldness of traditional Scottish dress.

Seat

The clan’s historic seat is Thirlestane Castle in Lauder, Berwickshire, which remains one of the most iconic and beautifully preserved castles in Scotland, symbolizing the clan’s enduring legacy and status.
