THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name "Sgian Dubh," which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetics—historically, handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly atop the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signifying friendship and good intentions.
It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not, should not be considered, and has never been a weapon!
