Motto:
“I Saved the King.”
This proud declaration directly recalls the legendary origin of the Turnbull name — an act of courage and loyalty that forever defined the clan’s place in Scottish history.

🏰 Clan History

Clan Turnbull hails from the Scottish Borders, particularly the area around Rulewater in Roxburghshire. The clan’s legendary founder, William of Rule, is said to have saved King Robert the Bruce from being gored by a wild bull during a hunt. In gratitude, the king proclaimed:

“Ye turned the bull — henceforth ye shall be Turnbull!”

From that moment, the name “Turnbull” — literally “bull-turner” — became synonymous with valor and royal favor. The clan’s emblem and motto commemorate this heroic act.

During the turbulent centuries that followed, the Turnbulls became one of the most powerful and notorious families of the Borders. They were fierce and loyal warriors, often serving as both defenders and raiders along the Anglo-Scottish frontier. Despite their sometimes rebellious nature, they remained true to Scotland’s crown and were famed for their physical strength and fearlessness.

⚔️ Territory and Influence

The Turnbulls were a dominant Border clan, with lands centered around Bedrule, near Hawick, in Roxburghshire. Bedrule Kirk and the ruins of Rulewater are still associated with the clan today. Their territory placed them among the formidable Border Reivers — families who defended Scotland’s southern frontier through centuries of conflict and shifting alliances.

🐂 Symbolism of the Crest

The black bull’s head symbolizes raw strength, courage, and determination — qualities that defined the Turnbulls for generations. The green horns may signify renewal and vitality, while the gold belt represents honor and loyalty. Together, these elements embody a family both fierce and faithful, forever tied to its legendary act of saving the king.

🧵 Clan Tartan

The Turnbull tartan features deep greens, blues, and blacks with fine red accents — representing the Borders landscape, loyalty, and the clan’s proud martial tradition. It is still worn today by Turnbull descendants worldwide.
