SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
This exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a black handle, is available with your Clan crest crafted in lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.
Measuring 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, this newly designed Sgian Dubh showcases a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver plated fittings. The knife's top is adorned with a choice of imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green synthetic stone.
Encircled by a meticulously designed belt and buckle motif, the Clan crest is elegantly inscribed with your clan motto in raised relief. Historically, the chief of the Clan would present his crest to his clansmen as a symbol of loyalty and affiliation. Each piece is intricately handcrafted in high detail using sterling silver, and the Clan Crest measures 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please note that this item is custom-made and typically ships in just a few days. All Clans are available for personalization. To complete your order, simply enter your Clan name in the comments section. While this Sgian Dubh is crafted with care, please be aware that the handle and sheath are made from resin material, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, a "genuine" antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000. This offering is an economical alternative.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, meaning Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance—early versions often featured handles carved from black bog wood, while the blades darkened over time due to use and aging.
Another theory suggests that the name stems from the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking while in Highland attire, signifying that the wearer is among friends and poses no threat.
It is important to emphasize that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon!
