🏰 Clan Skene History

Clan Skene (Scottish Gaelic: Clann Sgian) is an ancient Highland clan with origins in Aberdeenshire, in northeastern Scotland.
The family’s name is derived from the Gaelic word “sgian” — meaning “knife” or “dagger.” The clan’s legendary origin tells of a Highland warrior who saved the life of King Malcolm II (reigned 1005–1034) by killing a wild wolf with only his small dagger. In gratitude, the king granted him lands in Aberdeenshire, which became known as Skene.

The Skenes were staunch supporters of the Scottish crown throughout the medieval period and fought in many of Scotland’s defining battles, including Bannockburn (1314) and Flodden (1513). They were also close allies of the Gordons and later played active roles in regional governance and the military.

The principal line of the family was seated at Skene House, near Lyne of Skene, Aberdeenshire — a fine tower house that remained in the family for centuries. By the 17th century, cadet branches had spread throughout the northeast and into Fife and Angus.
