🗡️ The History of the Sgian Dubh

The name Sgian Dubh — Gaelic for Black Knife — is believed to come from either:

• Its dark appearance, as early handles were carved from black bog wood, or

• Its “hidden” nature, as a small blade discreetly carried for daily tasks.

Traditionally, the Sgian Dubh is worn in open view, tucked into the kilt hose, symbolizing trust and friendship — that the wearer bears no concealed weapon.
It is not and should never be considered a weapon, but a ceremonial emblem of honor and heritage.
