History

The MacThomas Clan (Clann MacThòmais) traces its ancestry to Thomas, a grandson of William Mackintosh, chief of Clan Chattan. In the 15th century, Thomas led his followers to Glen Shee in Perthshire, where the clan established itself independently and took his name.

Known for their independence and strength, the MacThomases were a proud Highland clan despite their smaller size. They often faced pressures from powerful neighbors such as the Gordons and Campbells, but maintained their own chief and traditions. By the 17th century, many members spread into Angus, Aberdeenshire, and beyond, leaving a distinct mark on Scottish clan history.

Tartan

The MacThomas tartan is designed with greens and blues interlaced with red and white stripes, symbolizing the rugged strength of Glen Shee and the proud heritage of the clan.

Seat

The clan’s heartland was Glen Shee in Perthshire, which remained central to their identity before social and political changes dispersed many of its people. Today, Clan MacThomas is represented by an active clan society that preserves its traditions and history.
