Collection: MacPhail

Clan MacPhail

The Clan MacPhail (Gaelic: Clann Mhic Phàil, meaning “son of Paul”) is a Highland family with ancient Christian roots. Their name derives from the early Celtic devotion to St. Paul, making it one of the oldest surnames of ecclesiastical origin in the Highlands. Historically, branches of the MacPhails were closely linked with the Clan Chattan Confederation, particularly the MacKintoshes, and others became associated with the MacLeods of Skye.

Clan Crest

The crest of Clan MacPhail depicts a stag’s head cabossed (facing forward), symbolizing vigilance, strength, and a deep connection to the Highland wilderness.

Clan Motto

The motto is “Memor Esto” (Be Mindful), a reminder of loyalty, memory, and awareness of one’s duty and heritage.

Clan Septs

Associated names and septs include Paul, MacFall, MacFaul, MacVail, MacPhail, MacPherson, and other variations that spread widely across Scotland and beyond.

Clan Tartan

The MacPhail tartan is a traditional Highland sett of green, blue, and black with red overchecks, representing both the woodland strength of the stag and the enduring legacy of the clan.
