The Origin of the “Sgian Dubh”

In Gaelic, “Sgian Dubh” means “black knife.” The name may come from the dark bog-wood handles and blades that darkened with age, or from the knife’s once-concealed nature—hence today’s custom of wearing it visibly in the hose.
