MacFie Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacFie heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The MacFie clan, sometimes spelled MacPhee, MacDuffie, or MacPhie, is one of the oldest of the Hebridean clans, with strong ties to the island of Colonsay. The name derives from the Gaelic Mac Dhuibhshíth, meaning “son of the dark peaceful one.” Known for their independence, the MacFies were traditionally recognized as keepers of records and lore. Despite struggles and dispersal after the clan’s power waned in the 17th century, MacFies remained a proud part of Highland society.

  • Crest: A demi-lion rampant, symbolizing courage and vigilance.

  • Motto: Pro Rege — “For the King.”

  • Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the crest within a strap-and-buckle design, displaying the motto as a sign of loyalty.
