SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
This exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle, is available adorned with your Clan crest crafted from lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.
Measuring 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, this newly designed Sgian Dubh boasts a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver-plated fittings. At the top, choose from an imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green synthetic stone to personalize your piece.
The Clan crest is elegantly framed by a detailed belt and buckle motif, which features your clan motto inscribed in raised relief lettering. Historically, clan chiefs presented their crests to clansmen as a token of loyalty and affiliation. Each Sgian Dubh is meticulously handcrafted with a focus on detail, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically within a few days. All Clans are represented. To finalize your custom order, please include your Clan name in the comments section during the ordering process. While the Sgian Dubh is expertly constructed, it features a resin handle and sheath, with plated fittings. In contrast, a genuine antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000.00; this model offers a more economical option.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to stem from the knife's dark appearance, as early versions often featured handles carved from black bog wood, while the blades darkened with use and time.
Another theory suggests the name arose from its nature as a concealed weapon, which is why it is customarily worn in plain sight at the top of the stocking with Highland dress, signaling that the wearer is among friends and means no harm.
It's important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it be considered, a weapon!
