SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
This exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife characterized by its black handle, is now available featuring your Clan crest crafted in lead-free pewter or premium sterling silver.
Measuring 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, this newly designed Sgian Dubh boasts a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver plated fittings. The knife's top is adorned with your choice of synthetic stone: an imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
The Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a detailed belt and buckle motif, showcasing your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, Clan chiefs bestowed their crests upon clansmen as symbols of loyalty and allegiance. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted with exceptional detail in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please note that this product is made to order and typically takes just a few days to produce. All clans are available, and to personalize your order, kindly include your Clan name in the comments section at checkout. While this Sgian Dubh is robustly crafted, the handle and sheath are made from resin, and the fittings are plated. For comparison, a traditional Sgian Dubh with solid sterling silver fittings often retails for over $1,000.00; this version offers an affordable alternative.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to be derived from the knife's dark appearance; early handles were typically hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time with use and age.
Another theory suggests that the name stems from the knife's potential as a concealed weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain sight on the top of the stocking while in Highland attire, indicating that the wearer is among friends and harbors no malicious intent.
It is important to emphasize that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it ever be considered, a weapon!
With over forty years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest industry, our company proudly continues to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
