THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to stem from the knife's dark appearance, with early handles often made from black bog wood and blades darkening over time through use. An alternative theory suggests the name relates to the concealed nature of this knife, as it was traditionally kept visible at the top of the stocking when wearing Highland attire, symbolizing friendship and good intentions.
