The term “Sgian Dubh” means “Black Knife” in Gaelic — believed to refer to either its dark handle, traditionally carved from black bog wood, or its role as a concealed personal blade.
Over time, it became customary to wear the knife openly in the top of the kilt hose, symbolizing that the wearer came in peace and friendship.
