🗡️ The Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The name Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for “Black Knife”) likely comes from the knife’s dark appearance — early versions were carved from black bog wood, and their blades darkened with use and age.
Another theory links the name to the “hidden” nature of the blade, once concealed for protection but now traditionally worn openly in the top of the kilt hose, symbolizing trust and peace among friends.
Note: The Sgian Dubh is a ceremonial accessory — it is not and should not be considered a weapon.
