📜 The Origin of the “Sgian Dubh”

The term Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for Black Knife) carries a deep historical meaning:

  • Early versions were often carved from black bog wood, giving rise to its name.

  • Another theory suggests it refers to the concealed nature of the blade — hence the tradition of wearing it openly in the Highland stocking to show friendship and peace.

The Sgian Dubh was never meant as a weapon but as a ceremonial and practical accessory, essential to traditional Highland dress.
