🏰 About the Sgian Dubh

The name Sgian Dubh (pronounced Skee-an Doo) means “Black Knife” in Gaelic.
Its origins may come from:

  • The dark color of early handles carved from black bog wood and aged blades.

  • Or its once concealed nature, when Highlanders carried the knife hidden in their clothing.
Today, it is worn openly in the top of the kilt hose, symbolizing trust and friendship — showing that the wearer bears no hidden weapon or ill intent.

The Sgian Dubh is not, and should never be, considered a weapon — it is a ceremonial piece of Highland attire, representing culture and tradition.
