⚔️ THE HISTORY & SYMBOLISM OF THE SGIAN DUBH
🖤 The Black Knife of Scotland
The term “Sgian Dubh” (pronounced skee-an doo) comes from the Gaelic for “Black Knife.” Its name may have originated from:
-
The knife’s dark appearance, as early handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with age and use.
-
The “dark” or hidden nature of a small blade once kept concealed — leading to the Highland custom of wearing it openly in the top of the stocking to show friendship and peace.
Today, the Sgian Dubh remains a symbol of Scottish identity, worn proudly with Highland dress at formal occasions.
⚠️ The Sgian Dubh was never intended as a weapon — it represents trust, tradition, and heritage.
