🕰️ The History of the Sgian Dubh
The Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for “Black Knife”) has a rich and mysterious past.
-
Its name likely arose from its dark handle — once carved from black bog wood — and the darkened blade that came with age and use.
-
Another tradition suggests that its name comes from its hidden or “black” nature, once a concealed sidearm. To show goodwill, Highlanders began wearing the Sgian Dubh openly in the top of the stocking, symbolizing that the bearer was among friends and meant no harm.
Though symbolic of the warrior’s past, the modern Sgian Dubh is not and should never be considered a weapon — it remains a ceremonial item representing honor, friendship, and tradition.
