📜 The History of the Sgian Dubh

The term “Sgian Dubh” (pronounced skeen doo) means “Black Knife” in Gaelic.
Its origins are thought to stem from:

• The dark appearance of early Sgian Dubhs, often carved from black bog wood, and

• The concealed nature of the blade — once a discreet personal knife.

Traditionally, Highlanders now wear the Sgian Dubh openly in the top of the stocking, symbolizing friendship, honor, and peace.
