📜 The Story Behind the Sgian Dubh
The name Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for “Black Knife”) is steeped in history and tradition.
Early versions were crafted from dark bog wood with blades that aged to a deep hue — giving rise to the term “black knife.”
Another legend suggests the name refers to its once-secretive nature as a concealed blade. Today, however, it is worn openly in the top of the kilt hose, symbolizing friendship and peace — a visible sign that the wearer carries no ill intent.
🗡️ The Sgian Dubh is not, and never should be, considered a weapon — it is a proud emblem of Scottish honor and tradition.
