📜 The Origin of the Sgian Dubh

The term Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for Black Knife) is believed to stem from its dark appearance — early handles were carved from black bog wood, and blades darkened with use and age.

Another tradition suggests its “dark” name comes from its former role as a concealed blade.
To demonstrate peaceful intent, Highlanders began wearing the knife openly in the top of their stocking, where it remains today as part of formal Highland dress.

⚠️ The Sgian Dubh is a ceremonial and decorative item — not a weapon.
