The Gaelic term Sgian Dubh means “black knife.” Early versions were crafted from dark bog wood and developed their blackened patina through use.
Another legend holds that the name refers to its once-concealed nature — explaining why it is now worn openly in the kilt hose, symbolizing friendship and goodwill.

The Sgian Dubh was not, is not, and should not be considered a weapon — it is a ceremonial emblem of Scottish tradition and honor.
