The Origin of the “Sgian Dubh”

The Gaelic term “Sgian Dubh” translates to “black knife.” Early examples often used dark bog-wood handles, and blades darkened with age—another likely source of the name. In Highland custom, a guest would keep hidden weapons out of sight but wear the small knife visibly in the stocking upon entering a home—an open sign of trust and good intent.
