⚔️ Scottish Clan Crest Sgian Dubh

Celebrate your proud Scottish heritage with this beautifully crafted Sgian Dubh, the traditional black-handled Highland knife, mounted with your Clan crest in your choice of lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.

Design & Craftsmanship

This finely detailed piece measures 7-1/2” (190 mm) in length by 1-3/8” (35 mm) in width.
It features:

  • A stainless steel blade with nickel silver plated fittings

  • A resin handle and sheath crafted for durability and presentation

  • A choice of imitation gemstones on the pommel: topaz (amber), sapphire blue, or emerald green

Each Sgian Dubh is mounted with your Clan crest, exquisitely handcrafted with meticulous detail.

The Clan Crest, measuring 11/16" (19.5 mm) in diameter, is surrounded by the traditional belt and buckle design, inscribed with your Clan motto in raised relief lettering — a time-honored emblem of loyalty and kinship.

🏴 Symbolism & Heritage

In ancient times, the Clan Chief presented his clansmen with his crest — surrounded by the belt and buckle motif — to be worn as a mark of loyalty and identity.
This Sgian Dubh continues that proud tradition, blending historic symbolism with contemporary Scottish craftsmanship.

Please note: while this is a well-made and finely finished Sgian Dubh, the handle and sheath are resin, and fittings are plated.
A true antique Sgian Dubh with solid sterling fittings can exceed $1,000 USD, making this piece a superb and affordable alternative.

📜 The Origin of the “Sgian Dubh”

The term Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for Black Knife) likely derives from the knife’s dark appearance — early versions were often carved from black bog wood, and the blade darkened with age and use.
Another theory holds that the name refers to the “dark” or hidden nature of this small blade, once carried concealed.
Over time, Highland tradition dictated that the Sgian Dubh be worn openly in the top of the kilt hose, symbolizing friendship and peaceful intent.

The Sgian Dubh was not, is not, and should not be considered a weapon, but rather a cherished part of Highland dress and ceremony.
