THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"

The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance—early handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time with use. Another theory suggests that the name stems from the weapon's easily concealed nature. Traditionally, the Sgian Dubh has been worn visibly at the top of the stocking while adorned in Highland attire, symbolizing that the wearer is among friends and poses no threat. It is essential to remember that the Sgian Dubh should not be regarded as a weapon!

With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest industry, our company proudly continues to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
