SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle and customizable with your Clan crest, available in lead-free pewter or luxurious sterling silver.
This newly crafted Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, boasting a durable stainless steel blade and elegant nickel silver plated fittings. The top of the knife is adorned with your choice of a synthetic stone: imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
Surrounding the Clan crest is a meticulously designed belt and buckle motif, complete with your clan motto inscribed in raised relief. Historically, the Clan chief would bestow this crest to his clansmen, symbolizing their loyalty and allegiance. Each Sgian Dubh is carefully handcrafted with remarkable detail in sterling silver, featuring a Clan Crest that measures 11/16 inches (19.5mm) in diameter.
This item is made to order and typically ships in just a few days. All Clans are available, so please include your Clan name in the comments section when placing your order. While this Sgian Dubh is robustly constructed, it features a resin handle and sheath, with plated fittings. In contrast, a genuine antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can cost over $1,000, making this piece an economical choice.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic as "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance, as early handles were often crafted from black bog wood, with blades darkening over time due to wear and age. Another theory suggests that its name stems from the weapon’s easily concealable nature, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, signifying the wearer’s friendly intentions.
It is crucial to note that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon, nor should it be regarded as such!
