THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"

The name Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance. Early handles were often crafted from black bog wood, while the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain sight atop the stocking while dressed in Highland attire, signaling the wearer’s friendly intent and absence of malice. It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!

With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest industry, our company proudly serves the descendants of our first customers, creating Clan jewelry for their children and grandchildren.
