THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic to "Black Knife," is believed to have originated due to the knife's dark appearance. Historically, handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken with age and use.
Another theory suggests that the name derives from the concealed nature of this weapon. Traditionally, it is worn visibly at the top of the stocking while dressed in Highland attire, symbolizing that the wearer is among friends and harbors no malicious intent.
Importantly, the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be viewed as a weapon!
