THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"

The name Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance; early versions often featured handles carved from black bog wood, while blades darkened with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name arose from the concealed nature of the weapon; thus, it has become customary to display the Sgian Dubh on top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, indicating the wearer's friendly intentions.

It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be considered a weapon!
