SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle, now available adorned with your Clan crest in lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.
This stunning Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, boasting a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver-plated fittings. The knife is accented with a choice of an imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green synthetic stone at the top.
Embellished with your Clan crest, the design showcases a detailed belt and buckle motif, elegantly inscribed with your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, Clan chiefs bestowed their crest upon clansmen as a symbol of loyalty and Clan affiliation. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please note that this item is made to order and typically takes just a few days to create. We offer every Clan, so when placing your order, simply add your Clan name in the comments section. While this Sgian Dubh is expertly crafted, please be aware that the handle and sheath are made from resin material, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, a "genuine" antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000. This piece is a more economical option.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is believed to reflect the knife's dark appearance—early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with use and age.
An alternative theory suggests that the name arose from the concealed nature of this weapon, leading to the custom of keeping the Sgian Dubh prominently displayed at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, signifying that its bearer is among friends and harbors no ill intent.
It’s important to emphasize that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be viewed as a weapon!
