SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle. This stunning piece can be customized with your Clan crest, available in both lead-free pewter and fine sterling silver.
This newly crafted Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, boasting a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver-plated fittings. The top of the knife is adorned with a synthetic stone available in imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
Your Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a detailed belt and buckle motif, which is inscribed with your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, the Clan chief would present this crest to his clansmen, symbolizing their loyalty and affiliation with the Clan. Each Sgian Dubh is meticulously handcrafted with high attention to detail, and the Clan Crest measures 11/16 inch (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please note that this item is made to order, typically taking less than a few days for completion. All Clans are available. To personalize your order, simply include your Clan name in the comments section during checkout. While this Sgian Dubh is crafted with quality in mind, the handle and sheath are made from resin, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, a genuine antique Sgian Dubh featuring sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000.00; this model offers a more economical alternative.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from its dark appearance—early versions often featured handles carved from black bog wood, while the blade would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name relates to the concealed nature of the weapon, signifying that wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly on top of the stocking while dressed in Highland attire indicates the wearer is among friends and poses no threat. It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not considered a weapon.
