THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, meaning Black Knife in Gaelic, is thought to originate from its traditionally dark appearance—early handles were frequently hand-carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken with use. Another theory posits that the name reflects the concealed nature of this small weapon, emphasizing the tradition of displaying the Sgian Dubh atop the stocking in Highland dress, symbolizing friendship and goodwill.
