🏰 Clan Rutherford History

Clan Rutherford is a Lowland Scottish clan originating from the Borders region, particularly Roxburghshire. The name “Rutherford” is territorial — derived from lands near the River Tweed, around the village of Rutherford in the parish of Maxton.

The earliest recorded ancestor is Robertus de Rodyrforde, who witnessed a charter in the reign of David I of Scotland (1124–1153). The clan grew to prominence as a powerful Border family — fierce defenders of their territory in the turbulent Scottish Borders, where constant conflict with English forces shaped a tradition of courage and independence.

In the 16th century, the Rutherfords were known as part of the famous Border Reivers — families who guarded (and raided) across the Anglo-Scottish frontier. They were noted for their skill as horsemen and fighters. Despite their reiving reputation, they also produced distinguished soldiers and scholars, including Andrew Rutherford, 1st Earl of Teviot, who served with distinction in France and Tangier in the 17th century.

  • A martlet (a stylized swallow) — depicted in black (sable) and facing to the right.
The martlet traditionally represents constant effort, noble action, and perseverance, as it was believed to be a bird that never lands, symbolizing restlessness and quest for advancement.

  • The crest is surrounded by the classic belt and buckle design, symbolizing allegiance to the clan chief.

💬 Clan Motto

The Latin motto encircling the crest reads:

“Nec Sorte Nec Fato”
(“Neither by chance nor by fate”)

This powerful phrase asserts that success or destiny comes through one’s own actions, not by luck or predetermination — fitting for a clan renowned for its independence and self-reliance.
