🏰 Clan Ross History

Clan Ross is one of the oldest Highland clans, with origins tracing back to the ancient Celtic Earls of Ross in the 12th century. The clan’s progenitor was Fearchar Mac an t-Sagairt (“the son of the priest”), a powerful chief from the area around Tain in Ross-shire, in the Scottish Highlands.
He supported King Alexander II of Scotland in suppressing rebellions and was rewarded with the title Earl of Ross in 1226.

The Rosses were a powerful and respected clan, their lands extending across much of Easter Ross. They were known for loyalty to the Scottish crown and for their role as peacekeepers in the Highlands.
Unlike many clans, Clan Ross was not often at war with neighbors; they maintained stable relations with the Munros, Mackenzies, and Frasers.

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, members of Clan Ross fought alongside Robert the Bruce. The clan’s power declined in later centuries, particularly after the 17th century, but their noble legacy and leadership within the Highlands remain celebrated.

The chief of Clan Ross historically held the title “of Balnagown,” referring to the ancestral seat Balnagown Castle, which stands near Alness in Ross-shire.
