🏰 Clan Rose History

Clan Rose of Kilravock (pronounced “Kil-rav-ock”) is an ancient Highland clan with deep roots in Nairnshire, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The Roses are one of the few Highland clans of Norman origin, having settled in Scotland in the 12th century. The name “Rose” derives from the Norman family de Ros, who came to Scotland under David I (1124–1153).

The Roses established themselves at Kilravock Castle, near the River Nairn, which became their hereditary seat. The castle, built around 1460, has remained continuously in the family’s hands for over five centuries — an exceptionally rare distinction in Scottish history.

Members of the Rose family were respected for their wisdom and diplomacy, often acting as mediators between rival Highland clans. They maintained a close alliance with Clan Fraser of Lovat and generally avoided destructive feuding, contributing to their longevity and stability.

The current Chief holds the title Chief of Clan Rose of Kilravock, a title passed through unbroken lineage since medieval times.

The harp symbolizes not only musical grace but also the clan’s long-standing dedication to peace and integrity.

💬 Clan Motto

The motto inscribed on the crest reads:

“Constant and True”

This reflects the clan’s centuries-old reputation for steadfastness, loyalty, and moral integrity. The Roses were renowned for their honesty and commitment to peace, even during times of Highland unrest.

  • Rouse

  • Ross (in some regions, though this may overlap with Clan Ross)

  • De Ros (ancient Norman form)

These names often appear in records across Nairnshire and Moray.

The Rose tartan is a distinctive and elegant pattern that reflects the clan’s Highland heritage. It features:

  • Dark green and navy blue base,
