Clan Ramsay

History
The Ramsay clan is of ancient Scottish origin, with roots tracing back to the 12th century when Symon de Ramesie, a noble of Norman descent, settled in Midlothian under the reign of David I of Scotland. Over time, the Ramsays became one of the most distinguished Lowland families, known for their loyalty to the Scottish crown and service in both politics and the military.
The clan’s historical seat was Dalhousie Castle near Edinburgh, held by the Ramsay family for over 800 years. Throughout history, members of Clan Ramsay served as knights, parliamentarians, and defenders of Scotland’s independence.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Ramsay clan crest features a unicorn’s head, symbolizing purity, strength, and courage — a creature long associated with Scottish heraldry.
The clan motto is “Ora et Labora,” which translates from Latin as “Pray and Work.” It embodies the Ramsay spirit of devotion, perseverance, and diligence in both faith and duty.

Clan Septs
Families and names associated with Clan Ramsay include Dalhousie, Maule, and Symon. These septs share the same noble heritage and allegiance to the Ramsay lineage.

Clan Tartan
The Ramsay tartan is a vibrant pattern of light blue, dark blue, green, and red, symbolizing balance, bravery, and harmony.
It reflects the Ramsay family’s steadfastness and commitment to both spiritual and worldly endeavors — a proud mark of heritage and honor.
