Clan Pitcairn
History
The Pitcairn family takes its name from the ancient lands of Pitcairn in Fife, Scotland. The name comes from the Gaelic words “pit” meaning “portion of land” and “cairn” meaning “stone mound,” referring to early territorial landmarks.
The Pitcairns were established as landowners and knights as early as the 13th century, with their ancestral estate located near Leslie in Fife. They served loyally under the Scottish kings, particularly during the Wars of Independence.
Members of the clan were known for their courage and scholarship, and later branches spread into Perthshire and the Lothians. One of the most famous descendants, Dr. John Pitcairn, served as a British officer during the American Revolution, and his son helped establish the famous Pitcairn Island in the Pacific.
Clan Crest and Motto
The Pitcairn crest features a radiant sun with a human face, representing life, light, and enlightenment.
The motto is “Plena Refulget,” meaning “It shines in full splendor.” It reflects the family’s pursuit of knowledge, integrity, and enduring honor through generations.
Clan Septs
The surname appears in several forms, including Pitcairn, Pitkairn, and Pitkarn. These families share a common origin in Fife and have preserved their Scottish identity through centuries.
Clan Tartan
The Pitcairn tartan combines tones of green, navy, and red, with subtle white and yellow over-checks.
It represents warmth, wisdom, and steadfastness — values reflected in the Pitcairn name and the shining sun of their crest.
