Clan Paterson

History
The Paterson clan takes its name from the patronymic “son of Patrick,” originating in the Scottish Lowlands. The family became well established in Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, and Banffshire, later spreading into the Highlands and across the Scottish borders.
Throughout history, the Patersons were respected for their skill, hard work, and loyalty — serving as farmers, craftsmen, and soldiers. Although the clan does not currently have a recognized chief and is considered armigerous, it remains a proud name within Scottish heritage, carried by generations known for integrity and perseverance.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Paterson clan crest shows a hand rising from clouds, holding a sprig of laurel and olive intertwined, symbolizing peace, honor, and triumph.
The clan motto is “Huc Tendimus Omnes,” meaning “We all strive for this.” It represents unity, shared purpose, and the collective pursuit of excellence — a reflection of the Paterson spirit through centuries.

Clan Septs
Common variations of the name include Patterson, Pattison, and Pateson. All derive from the same ancestral line and share the same motto and crest traditions.

Clan Tartan
The Paterson tartan features rich tones of blue, green, and red, intersected with fine white lines. It symbolizes harmony, loyalty, and strength — values deeply rooted in the Paterson family name and heritage.
