Clan Napier

History
The Napier family has a long and notable history in Scotland, tracing its roots to the ancient earldom of Lennox and the royal families of Scotland and Ireland.
One theory of the surname’s origin suggests a royal officer (“naperer”) in charge of the royal linens and tablecloths. Another popular legend records that during a battle one brave knight stood out, and the king is said to have exclaimed “nae peer” (no equal), leading to the surname Napier.
The earliest recorded Napier is John de Naper, who received lands in Dunbartonshire before 1290. In 1436 Alexander Napier of Merchiston acquired the lands of Merchiston and became Provost of Edinburgh; his descendants rose to peerage, with the title Lord Napier established in the 17th century.

Clan Crest and Motto
The clan crest displays a right (dexter) arm, graciously bent at the elbow, grasping a silver crescent.
The motto is “Sans Tache”, which translates as “Without stain.”
These symbols reflect honour, integrity and distinction — the Napier family striving to live without blemish and to stand unmatched.

Clan Septs
The principal surname is Napier (also spelled Naper, Napper, Naiper, etc.).
There are no widely accepted additional septs specifically recorded for the clan.

Clan Tartan
The Napier tartan is recognised in various forms (Ancient, Modern, Dress, Hunting). The pattern is worn by those bearing the Napier name or allied families.
Different shades (ancient soft tones vs. modern brighter tones) reflect the evolution of tartan weaving and dye behind the Napier heritage.
