📜 The Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The name Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for Black Knife) is believed to stem from its dark appearance — the early handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with age. Another theory suggests its “dark” name arose from the weapon’s once-concealed nature. Over time, it became customary to wear the Sgian Dubh visibly in the top of the stocking — a sign of friendship and honesty, showing one’s hands were free of concealed weapons.
The Sgian Dubh is not and should not be considered a weapon, but rather a symbol of honor, heritage, and tradition.
