Collection: Murray of Atholl
Clan Murray of Atholl
History
The Murray of Atholl branch is the most distinguished and powerful line of Clan Murray. Descended from the Murrays of Tullibardine, this family rose to great prominence in Scottish history, becoming the Earls of Atholl in the 17th century and later the Dukes of Atholl.
The Atholl Murrays were known for their loyalty to the Scottish crown and their leadership in Highland affairs. Their ancestral seat, Blair Castle in Perthshire, remains a proud monument to the clan’s heritage and strength.
Clan Crest and Motto
The Murray of Atholl crest shows a demi-savage, crowned with a wreath of laurel, holding a dagger in his right hand and a key in his left. This symbolizes courage, protection, and readiness — the dagger for defense and the key for guardianship.
The clan motto is “Furth Fortune and Fill the Fetters,” which means “Go forth with fortune and take your captives.” It reflects the clan’s bravery, honor, and determination to succeed in every challenge.
Clan Septs
The associated families (septs) of the Murray of Atholl line include:
Balneaves, Dinsmore, Dunsmore, Fleming, Moray, Murrie, Murry, Neaves, Piper, Pyper, Smail, Smale, Small, Smeal, and Spalding.
Clan Tartan
The Murray of Atholl tartan features dark green and navy blue crossed with red and white over-checks. It represents the noble character of the Atholl family — steadfast, bold, and always ready.
