Clan Moffat

Crest Badge:
The badge shows a silver saltire (St. Andrew’s cross) surmounted by a black cross crosslet fitchee, set above an antique golden crown. Encircled by the traditional strap-and-buckle design, it bears the clan motto.

Motto:
Spero Meliora — “I Hope for Better Things.”

History:
Clan Moffat comes from the Scottish Borders, with their name taken from the town of Moffat in Dumfriesshire. In the Middle Ages they were a powerful family in Annandale, but like many Border clans, they were involved in turbulent rivalries. Their greatest feud was with the Johnstones, who in the mid-16th century carried out a massacre that nearly destroyed the clan’s leadership. Despite this, the Moffat name survived and spread widely across Scotland and abroad.

Seat:
Historically, the clan was centered in Annandale, Dumfriesshire, though after their decline in the 16th century, no single chief seat remained. Today, Clan Moffat is recognized as an armigerous clan, without a current chief.
