Clan Middleton

Crest: A red lion emerging from the battlements of a tower.
Motto: “Fortis in Arduis” (Strong in Difficulties).

History

The surname Middleton originates from lands named Middleton in Kincardineshire, near Laurencekirk. The family took their name from these lands in the 12th century. From early on, the Middletons became established as a noble family with military and political influence in Scotland.

One of the most distinguished members was John Middleton, 1st Earl of Middleton (1608–1674). He was a soldier who first fought for the Covenanters during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms but later switched allegiance to King Charles II. For his loyalty, he was rewarded with the title Earl of Middleton and served as Lord High Commissioner of Scotland.

Despite this honor, the family fortunes waned in the late 17th century, and much of their influence diminished. Nevertheless, the Middletons remain remembered for their strong military service and their role in both Covenanting and Royalist causes during turbulent times.
