Clan Maxwell

Crest: A stag’s head emerging from a coronet.
Motto: “Reviresco” (I grow strong again).

History

The Maxwell Clan is one of the great Border families of Scotland, with roots tracing back to the 12th century. The name is thought to come from Maccus’ Well, a pool or spring near Melrose associated with an early Norse chief named Maccus.

By the 13th century, the Maxwells had established themselves as a powerful family in the Scottish Borders, particularly in Dumfriesshire. They played a central role in the turbulent history of the Borderlands, involved in both defending against and raiding across the English frontier.

The Maxwells were often at odds with other Border clans, especially the Johnstones, with whom they fought a long and bloody feud. Despite these conflicts, they rose to prominence and were elevated to the peerage as Lords Maxwell and later as Earls of Nithsdale.

Crest & Motto

The clan crest shows a stag’s head issuing from a coronet, symbolizing nobility, courage, and the wilderness of the Borders.
The motto “Reviresco” (I grow strong again) reflects the resilience and renewal of the clan despite political struggles, feuds, and changing fortunes.

Tartan

The Maxwell tartan is a rich pattern of dark green, black, and red, reflecting both their Border heritage and their Highland connections. It remains one of the distinctive Border tartans.

Seat

The Maxwells’ main stronghold was Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfriesshire, an iconic triangular fortress whose ruins remain a symbol of the clan’s former might.
