History

The MacRae Clan (Clann Mhic Rath) is a loyal Highland clan historically allied with the powerful Clan Mackenzie. The name MacRae means “son of grace” in Gaelic, and the clan’s traditions speak of Irish origins before settling in Kintail in the northwest Highlands.

By the 16th century, the MacRaes had become known as the “Mackenzies’ shirt of mail”, serving as their trusted warriors and bodyguards. They gained fame for their courage at Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic strongholds, where MacRaes acted as hereditary constables. Their reputation as fierce fighters and loyal allies secured them a lasting place in Highland history.

Tartan

The MacRae tartan features a bold pattern of dark green and navy with red and white overstripes, symbolizing the clan’s martial heritage and enduring loyalty.

Seat

The clan’s traditional seat is Eilean Donan Castle, located at the meeting point of three sea lochs in Kintail, Ross-shire. The castle remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Scotland, a testament to the MacRaes’ enduring legacy.
